Suffering from dandruff can have a very big impact on someone’s self-esteem and confidence. Everybody suffers from dandruff in some sort of way because it is a natural part of how our body sheds old skin to make room for new skin to take its place. Some people, however, suffer from worsened cases of dandruff compared to others and we’ll find out why that it so. There is so much information and misinformation out on the internet about what the causes of dandruff actually are. There are so many products marketed to ‘’cure’’ dandruff. We will tackle which products actually work and which do not. We will also tell you what actually causes dandruff and how and what you can do to get rid of dandruff and prevent it from coming back again.

WHAT CAUSES DANDRUFF?

Causes of dandruff

So firstly let’s get to what actually causes dandruff. So everyone has skin shedding, this is a normal part of our bodies process of getting rid of the old for the new. This process happens not only on our scalp but every part of your body which has skin. But dandruff is when this normal process of skin renovation goes a little wrong and your skin starts to abnormally shed more skin than it needs to. This is also caused by skin inflammation. When skin inflames the skin turn red and is normally dry.

So what causes skin inflammation?

Recently studies have found that root cause of dandruff is a bacteria which lives on our scalp and skin. It’s called Malassezia. Everyone has Malassezia living on their scalp harmoniously without an issue. Unfortunately for some, this is where it goes wrong. Some of us have a bad reaction to this bacteria leading the skin to then inflame. Increasing skin shedding as we know as dandruff. Shedding an abnormal amount of skin shedding is a sign that our body is trying to fight back.

So your thinking that wait… So if I can get rid of this bacteria on my scalp then the dandruff is gone, right? No, unfortunately, you’re wrong. It’s harder to just get rid of Malassezia because this bacteria/fungus reproduces very fast and Malassezia actually thrives from the oil’s also known as sebum our body and scalp naturally produces. Have you ever has greasy hair? Well, that’s what sebum is. Too much oil production again which can be caused by irritated skin, can actually be food for Malassezia.

So what can you do?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for dandruff. So if there are articles or brands saying their products can cure dandruff it’s most likely not true. But dandruff is very much controllable if you use the right stuff on your hair and eat well.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DIET

Diet for getting rid of dandruff

When something goes wrong on your skin whether its acne or dandruff or swelling, for example, it’s a sign that something is wrong in the inside. Which makes sense and this is the case with dandruff. Consuming processed and sugary food can have a detrimental effect on our health and one of the very first signs of the effects is the skin. Sugar has been linked to inflammation as can be seen here. A study of 29 healthy people found that consuming only 40 grams of added sugar from just one 375-ml can of soda per day led to an increase in inflammatory markers, insulin resistance, and LDL cholesterol. These people tended to gain more weight. Read more here a report by NCBI

If you have a dry scalp it can cause your skin to produce more oil leading to dandruff as well. So a dry scalp can be a sign of dehydration. Drinking water is very important and do not substitute water for anything else. Drink at least 3L of water a day.

Take more Vitamin C. Whether you get this through a capsule or from fruit and veg it does not matter so long you are getting enough. Processed food lack Vitamins so make sure you take a substitute A-Z vitamin pill but do not depend on the pill too much, make sure you're having a fair share of fruits and veg because fruits and veg have vitamins and mineral and many other micronutrients which a pill will not have. Vitamin C, in general, is a great vitamin for a stronger immune system which can trigger inflammation if it is not strong enough.

USE THESE ANTI-FUNGAL SHAMPOOS

Anti-dandruff shampoo for dandruff

An anti-fungal shampoo is a must if you want to get dandruff under control. Some shampoos we recommend are:

nizoral shampoo

Nizoral ketoconazole 2% shampoo. Ketoconazole is an anti-fungal active ingredient in the shampoo which kills the Malassezia cell. It one of the best treatments for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.

t-gel

Neutrogena coal tar shampoo is another shampoo that we recommend you can use. Coal tar is the active ingredient in the shampoo which an anti-fungal.

Head and shoulders clinical strength which has the active ingredient selenium sulfide which is an anti-fungal. It is also one of the best treatments for stubborn dandruff.

NATURAL TREATMENTS FOR DANDRUFF
natural treaments for dandruff

There are natural treatments for dandruff as well. But we recommend they be used as well as over the counter shampoo we have mentioned above.

tea tree oil for dandruff

Tea tree oil is a favorite amongst dandruff sufferers because of its soothing effect. We do recommend you use tea tree oil with another carrier oil like olive oil because when used on its own it can burn skin and cause more harm than good. We recommend that you do a patch test before you use it on your scalp to make sure you do not have a skin reaction to the oil.

coconut

Coconut oil is also an anti-fungal oil which fights fungus. And can help fight dandruff.

lemon for dandruff

Try lemon, part water, and part lemon juice and rinse and pour over your scalp and leave for a minute and rinse. You can also wash after with you shampoo and conditioner.

apple cider for dandruff

Apple cider vinegar rinse. Also known as the ACV rinse it very popular amongst YouTube beauty guru’s and bloggers and some report it working from the first time. How does it work? Well, Malassezia works by altering the PH of the skin making the scalp more acidic which kills the Malassezia because they are unable to thrive in an acidic environment. There is no scientific research this works but you can give it a try because there will be no harm done.

To use you need half a cup of apple cider and 1 cup of water and rinse over hair and leave for 1 minute and wash off with water or shampoo and condition and usual.

scalp detox

A healthy scalp is important for good hair growth. With all the products we spray and apply to our hair, can also cause our scalps to be irritated and also worsen dandruff. This is why we recommend you use a scalp detox which cleanses impurities and soothes the scalp and also clarifies the skin from product build-up etc. The Grow Gorgeous Scalp Detox will help you grow healthier hair whilst rejuvenating your scalp and helping prevent dandruff.

So we hope you have found this article helpful. If you have let us know in the comment and share it and help someone else. This article was not sponsored by any brand and any product we did mention is because these are the only product which have been found to work for many people who suffer from dandruff. What you can take from this article is that the first sign there is something wrong with our bodies is our skin. When something is wrong with our skin then it is a sign that something is also gone wrong inside the body as well.
